CLUSTER vzw is a not-for-profit management and production platform for new-music composers and their projects. A far-reaching mix of styles characterises this new music: it is neither folk, jazz, symphonic nor world music, but all of these together, forged into a whole that represents the globalizing world in which we live. In a nutshell, the tonal poets of Cluster don’t really give a hoot about style characteristics, and mix them up in a fantastic way. Through their training and familiarity with different musical styles, they also master in improvisation techniques.
Like composers before them such as Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Anton Webern, Alban Berg, Olivier Messiaen, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Steve Reich or even Frank Zappa, the Cluster composers also play with musical conventions, explore the boundaries between the traditional genres and share an interest in the creative power of breaking through structures to arrive at new options and sound colours.
Through Cluster Wouter Vandenabeele, Joris Vanvinckenroye and Ananta Roosens want to share ideas and look for new challenges. The four of them are exemplary of a new breed of composers who benefit from their different experiences to combine the best of many music styles. The freedom found in improvisation or jazz, the skills of classical music, the emotional intelligence of folk/world music, the humor of comedy and the energy of the rock band, it all comes together in today’s music. Cluster is set up to further pave the way.
